The Annual report, 'Working together to save lives' has been published which reports on progress made toward meeting the 14 recommendations of the Taskforce report.
June 2009
The Organ Donation Taskforce published it's report in January 2008 which included 14 recommendations with the aim of increasing the number of organ donors by 50% over the next 5 years.
Clinicians and NHS managers are progressing well with the initiative to make organ donation usual, rather than unusual, throughout the UK’s healthcare system.
The Organ Donation Taskforce Implementation Programme has 26 separate areas of work, designed to increase the number of organs available for transplantation by at least 50% by 2013.
The Programme’s areas of work include improving the support for and understanding of donation across the NHS, addressing legal and ethical concerns, reimbursing Trusts for donation activity, strengthening Donor Transplant Coordinator and organ retrieval services and improving training, together with the public promotion of donation.
More than half of all acute hospitals have already delivered on the recommendation to appoint Clinical Leads for Organ Donation. Donation Committees are also being set up to steer and monitor local donation activity. Through this, local systems are being put in place to ensure that all potential donor families are given the choice of organ and tissue donation.
